Realizing that someone you care about is experiencing a difficult life transition may make you feel helpless, worried, or overwhelmed. Do you stand back, or jump in and help? Do you want to help, but not know how?
Simply start with a phone call, personal note or a visit to offer specific ways you can assist. Many people are not accustomed to needing or accepting help; others may be too sad or overwhelmed to know what to ask. Try to help by making a suggestion or offering a choice, such as " I would like to grocery shop or drive carpool for you next week, which would be more helpful to you?" Avoid offers of "call me if you need anything", unless you intend the phone to never ring.
While juggling your own day to day responsibilities, you may not be as available as you would like to be. You may live in a different community, or be limited in tasks you can easily provide.
